Halloween Gifts
Halloween or All Hallows Eve is holiday celebrated on the 31st of October.
The ancient holiday’s origins date back to the Celtic festival known as Samhain, which celebrated the end of the harvest season. According to the ancient Celts, the boundary between living and dead is blurred on the 31st October and the dead become dangerous to the living. In an attempt to placate evil spirits the Celts would wear masks, dress up and impersonate the dead. This is where the tradition of dressing up on Halloween comes from. Halloween is a common and popular holiday celebrated mainly in North America.
Halloween is one of the more amusing holidays where everyone has an excuse to dress up and give others fun and silly Halloween gifts.
The tradition for most people on Halloween is to swarm onto the streets and go door to door to “trick or treat” and accumulate a sickening amount of sweets and candy. In addition to “trick or treating” some people like to host their own parties and it’s a good idea to bring some Halloween gifts for the host.
Sweets
Most Halloween gifts include loads and loads of sweets and candy. Create little bags for individuals and use Halloween inspired sweets such as candy teeth, snakes and licorice black cats.
Homemade treats
Whether you’re the host or attending someone’s party, baking treats is one of the tastier Halloween gifts you can offer. With the jack-o-lantern being one of the more prominent symbols of Halloween use pumpkin as your inspiration when baking. Pumpkin pie is a great dessert and cupcakes with orange coloured icing and chocolate chips to make the face will make scrummy jack-o-lanterns. For a more grown up version of Halloween gifts, host a dinner party with pumpkin inspired risotto and pumpkin soup.
Cards
To scare your friends send out cards as one of your Halloween gifts. Many stores will stock Halloween inspired cards so you can send out anonymous cards with ill-wishes to keep up the spirit of Halloween.
Crazy Halloween gifts
If you really want to get into the spirit of Halloween, there are many fun and silly gifts you can give your friends. There are novelty cups with jack-o-lanterns, ghosts and cats, Halloween inspired spooky sleepwear, t-shirts and toys. To make sure you and your friends are well prepared, one of the most practical Halloween gifts is a sturdy ‘trick or treat’ carry bag to stuff with all the sweets and treats you collect on your travels through the neighborhood.
Books, Movies, Music
After being totally exhausted from going from door to door asking for treats and gorging on heaps of sweets, you’re sure to want to relax. More non-edible Halloween gifts are books, movies and music. There are many fun children’s picture books with fun stories to read. Caspar the friendly ghost is always a favourite. To create a mood and keep up a Halloween atmosphere, you can’t go past a bit of Michael Jackson’s Thriller playing in the background. For the brave, a horror movie is a great way to end the holiday. Turn out the lights and lock the doors and be prepared to scream.
Flashlights
When the lights are out and your imagination runs away with you, it might be a good idea to supply your friends with flashlights. They might come in handy when everyone gathers around to tell a scary story or two. This way you can also keep an eye on all those shadowy corners.
Halloween is probably one of the only times in the year where you get the chance to be a kid again and dress up, pretend and be someone else. To totally embrace the holiday it’s a great idea to give Halloween gifts to friends and family. It’s most likely the only time of the year when you’ll get away with scaring or surprising others by giving them tasty, scary or ridiculous Halloween gifts.
